Deciding an Ecommerce Solution for your store

So how should you decide on what shopping cart to use.

A good decision regarding development of your ecommerce store is essential. A bad decision can lead to a costly mistake and you may also exceed your target date for the project.
Most ecommerce stores will require a shopping cart (not just a simple buy now button), a payment gateway as well a backend administration system which runs and maintains the shopping cart.

1. Competitive and Industry analysis: You should have reference site(s) in mind as also the sites of the industry leaders in your area. These are useful when discussing the project with development firms like ours. These let us see in perspective what the small and big players are doing in their stores, what kind of programming they are using and how you can beat them.

2. Decide on the Functionality required:  Must haves and Good to have features: It is useful for you to have a look at online stores across various segments and see what kind of functionality is being offered. For example apparel stores are offering color swatch view, video of modeled apparel etc. for very high end stores. You must also consider which features are good to have vs. Must have. This can be useful while fitting a solution into a budget.

3. Look at the budget and funds available: You should have this in mind even if you don't disclose to us :-) upfront. Our sincere advice is not to fit unrealistic amount of functionality and design in low budget. Unscrupulous designers may promise you that but the end product will be such that you may have to shelve the whole thing.

4. Research and consider the ecommerce solutions : You should also do some online research on your on going to the sites of the popular ecommerce solutions such as oscommerce, x-cart, monstercommerce, volusion, aspdotnetstore, Vpasp and of course yahoo stores to see what features they are offering. Also see if they have mentioned any awards or acclaims.

5. Scout the market and consult with shortlisted development firms: You can use the above points and scout the market consulting with us on what are the trends and what kind of shopping carts are offering what. Based on the functionality, look and budget estimates you desire we generally find that we are able to shortlist 2-3 solutions from which the final one can be chosen.

6. Consider your supplier's backend: If your supplier is critical to your handling and if his systems need to be integrated with yours ( in terms of shipping/ financials) it is good to see what ecommerce solution can help. For example Amazon is fulfillment provider.

7. Decide on hosted vs. one time licensed shopping carts: One of the decisions we will help you take is whether you need a hosted vs. one time licensed shopping cart. This of course depends on budget as well as projected sales volume. The hosted shopping carts are easier to implemented and generally the development charges MAY be lesser but these carts have a monthly charge, are less flexible (because they make use of a hosts component) and are also closed source. This means only a certain level of programming related customization can be done on them. Also as your sales volume increase, these may have high variable costs as they generally charge a certain percentage per transaction as compared to a one-off price for one time licensed shopping carts.
